Health week at Cockermouth

Health, wellbeing and supporting local charities.

Wednesday, August 28, 2024

In July, the team at our Cockermouth site held a special week with a number of wellbeing-based activities and the aim of raising awareness of physical and mental health, as well as supporting a number of local charities.

For 2024, the annual event (known as Health Week) was moved to coincide with Cockermouth Charities Week, organised by Cockermouth & District Chamber of Trade. The initiative involves more than 80 businesses and organisations and this year has raised in excess of £27,000.

Throughout the week at James Walker, the spotlight was on several local charities with the aim of raising awareness of those that help the local community. Employees had the opportunity to learn about the services, what they do, and how they can be supported. The business was pleased to host Cockermouth Fire and Rescue, Cockermouth PCSO Andy's Man Club and North West Blood Bikes.

Tuesday 16th highlighted Health & Wellbeing, with local medical surgeries on hand to carry out a number of checks. The Alzheimers society provided information on how to identify symptoms and care for those with
the condition and Carers West Cumbria explained the support they can provide and also demonstrated the
effects of smoking on the body and how to carry out checks for signs of cancerous lumps. Healthy eating
and lifestyle tips were available during a number of talks, and there were also discussions on both women’s health and eye health.

A number of events were held to raise money and the site is proud to have contributed over £1000 for local charities.

Further information on the Cockermouth & Distract Chamber of Trade initiative, including the auctioning of a signed Ben Stoke's cricket bat to boost the total donation fund, can be found here.
