ONS 2024

Supporting existing and new technologies in energy

Wednesday, August 21, 2024

We're very happy to share that James Walker will be exhibiting at this year's ONS event in Stavanger.

ONS was the original meeting place for companies when oil and gas was first discovered in the North Sea - it stands for Offshore Northern Seas - and was targeted to those with operations in the North Sea basin. The event now attracts visitors from all over the world and has grown to reflect the energy transition.

We're happy to support the 2024 theme of 'IMAGINE' which is asking for people to take the action that really matters, to continue the good work and build on progress and James Walker is at the forefront of developing new sealing technologies to help our customers achieve exactly that.

Today around 80% of the world's industrial energy comes from fossil energy sources but there are significant political initiatives to replace fossil energy sources with sustainable, renewable and green solutions. Technology and innovation will play a central role in the transition. Existing and new technology will have new applications and innovation will be driven by private players who see new market opportunities.

In the new energy industry, petroleum will be replaced over time with renewable energy sources. In this transition, oil will still play an important role in terms of energy security and traditional energy companies will have to reinvent themselves and break out of their old business models with many new players coming into the market. This transition will see a drive for innovation in developing new, renewable energy solutions.

Sustainability, decarbonisation, carbon capture, energy efficiency and lower emissions will be among many new business opportunities and James Walker is already working with new and existing customers to develop the new technologies that will be required.

At ONS, you can find out more details about James Walker can support you by listening to our experts present on stand on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th August. We're hosting a number of micro-talks:

11am: Validating elastomer seals for the oil and gas market
12pm: Bolted joint integrity challenges in an offshore environment
2pm: Utilising high performance thermoplastics to optimise subsea and offshore part design and weight saving
3pm: Sealing net zero: hydrogen and CCUS challenges and solutions

You can visit the team in Hall 2, Stand 2500.

Oil & gas
Supporting customer challenges under extreme conditions such as rapid gas decompression, chemical attack and extremes of temperatures, we already have validated and proven materials for many new applications both subsea and onshore, upstream and downstream.

Hydrogen service
As there are no existing standards or approved test programmes in place for assessing sealing products and materials for hydrogen service, James Walker has taken the initiative in undertaking a programme of product and material validation. The objective is to give customers confidence that specific products or materials are suitable for hydrogen service, and that any such selection can be supported with evidence from relevant testing.

Carbon capture and storage
Transportation and storage of carbon dioxide can present a number risks and technical challenges including variations in system temperature, elevated pressures and significant volume changes.

Sealing components exposed to these extreme environments need to be supported by test data and proven field experience. James Walker has conducted testing with 100% CO2 across a number of materials to ensure that the products offered can cater for the most demanding applications in CCUS service.

Wind energy
James Walker has been a supplier of critical sealing and bolting solutions to the wind industry for many years, delivering innovations that provide long-term reliability, aid generating efficiency and minimise the costs of maintenance . From seal supply on the world's largest turbines to wireless bolt monitoring technology that can slash the costs of bolt checking, our products are integral to the continued growth of this sector.
